Donations for Hurricane Katrina

On August 29 Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in the Southeastern US cause large amounts of causing
property and infrastructure damage as well as loss of life. (At the time of this publication, these numbers are still growing.) 100% of all online donations to Grassroots.org in the month of September will go towards relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. To donate go to http://www.grassroots.org/do/Donate.

Free Web Design

In addition to free web hosting, Grassroots.org also offers two free web design services for registered nonprofit organizations in the US and Canada:

1. We provide web design volunteers who can work with you to learn about your organization and develop a web site based on information that you provide and the message you want your web site to convey.
2. Our free WYSIWYG ("What You See is What You Get") application allows you to create your own web site without requiring any technical skills such as knowledge of HTML or other web development or programming languages. See a sample web site that was created using the WYSIWYG tool.

There is no cost for the design services but, as with our free hosting service, clients must display a Grassroots.org banner on their home page. You can apply for all of our web services here.

The Association for Volunteer Administration

The Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) provides information on implementing volunteer programs and volunteer management issues. Their web site includes many general resources on these topics, as well as links to articles, job listings, and discussion forums. The association's annual conference will be held November 2-5 this year in Jacksonville, Florida.

Voice Over Internet Protocol

Today, because of the Internet, not only are users able to exchange and publish data (through e-mail and the web, to name a couple of applications), but high speed networks are allowing the Internet to facilitate voice communications. The analog signal from from voice is converted to digital, transmitted to your caller's computer and converted back to an analog signal for the caller to hear. Vendors like Vonage and Skype as well as traditional phone services (like AT&T) offer Internet telephony solutions for individuals and businesses. The efficiency offered by this Internet technology can save organizations and individuals tremendous amounts of money over traditional landline and cellular telephone services.
